Modul 25005: Medienmanagementseminar Media Research (SS '06)

C. Loebbecke (with Assistants)

Wahlpflichtveranstaltung, 2 SWS, 6 Credit Points (LP)

Overview
The course will cover the basics of scientific work
focussing on media management and systems. We will prepare for writing short papers and diploma thesis, think about research approaches, read review papers, and look at personal works by selected authors and the respective careers built on them.

The course will be taught in ENGLISH! Preparation will not be necessary. Registration (see below) is mandatory.
GROUP WORK will be strongly suggested. Groups of two or three students need to be formed before or during the first course meeting, individual work is possible!
We recommend groups of THREE students (it also helps to share work and learn about group work!).

Dates and Location
20.04., 27.04., 04.05., 11.05., 18.05., 22.06. (all '06), 17:00-20:30h in XXIII.
Participation at all dates but one is required for receiving Credit Points!

Specialty
We plan to have students review one paper of a conference which will take place in Bled, Slovenia, from June 4 to June 8, '06 (www.bledconference.org). We offer students to join us on our trip to Bled and meet the author and question her during or after her presentation. Authors love it when somebody has read their paper! Bled authors come from all over the world, mostly Europe and Australia, though. We would pre-select the papers so that you get to know fun authors and that they may even reply to an eMail ahead of time.
And who knows where you will go next in your life.
Constraint: Bled is during 'Pfingstferien', but it is a peaceful vacation place, and Bled costs money: about 1,000 km by car or train group ticket, accommodation (rather cheap for students), and 200 Euros registration fee per head. We cover 100 Euros of those 200 Euros.
Bled would be great fun (we took master students to Bled before, they said it was fun!), but it is NOT required for successfully taking the course.

Grading / Credit Points
Grading will be based on
- course participation - individual (25%),
- smaller exercises and assignments during the cou
rse - individual or group (25%),
- and written and oral paper review - group (50%).
Students receiving a final grade of 4,0 or better will be awarded
6 Credit Points ('Leistungspunkte') in Media Management.

Questions may be asked during the first session.
